Australian Open Championships
The Australian Open Championships started on Tuesday, 14 August 2012 and one of SAPDO's own, Graham Filby took part in the week of competitions held in Australia, at their Gold Coast. Top players in our Western Cape Premier league, Devon Petersen, Shawn Hogan, Waleed Clayton and Charles Losper were invited to attend. Unfortunately only Graham could attend due to a lack of funding and sponsorship.
Graham "The Detonator" Filby had to acclimatise as he lost his first two games down under. He performed better in the next event losing eventually in round three of the event. He vowed that he will not give up before he encountered Phil "The Power" Taylor in his next event where he took three legs from the Power. This chap is determined to take his darts to greater heights.
We caught up with Graham on his return to South Africa. He could not stop talking about the experience gained down under, especially from the local lads and Simon Whitlock. He said, "I am adamant that I will be back that side come next year."
The highlight of his trip was when he was driven around for three days in Phil Taylor's limousine before eventually being dropped at the airport. According to Graham this was an opportunity that no professional dart player could refuse.
SAPDO will be working to send a team over next year but it is still early days. We would like to send the top players and possibly rejuvenate the Dart Tri-Nations like in 2008. We are in contact with the DPA and will keep working on forging greater ties with our Southern Hemisphere counterparts.
Thank you Rob Denny and your team for the great support and advice you have filtered via Waleed and Charles. SAPDO is appreciative of your support and commitment to professional darts in South Africa.
